SPECIAL STATE PROJECTS

PREVENT CHILD ABUSE--NEW JERSEY:

During February, 2017, Club members toured Deirdre's House in Morristown, New Jersey.  This facility is a safe haven providing services and programs to the youngest victims of sexual and physical abuse in Morris County.  Members discussed with its Executive Director, Maria Vinci-Savettiere, ways in which the Club could support its work.

The first project was the collection and delivery during the month of March of three boxes of craft materials and two boxes of school and office supplies.  These were needed for the after school programs provided by Deirdre's House.  Also needed were single serve healthy snacks and drinks for the children.  During the months of March and April, Club members purchased and delivered  653 healthy snacks and 883  single serve juices, water and milk for the children coming to Deirdre'd House after school.Club members also celebrated April,  "Prevent Child Abuse Month",  by planting Pinwheel Gardens at three sites in Morristown: Town Hall, the Pocket Park next to the Grand Cafe and the Woman's Club.  Members donated $640 to PCA--NJ to purchase 550 pinwheels and three signs.  They were used to create the three gardens which were not only beautiful but also a constant reminder of the work necessary to prevent child abuse in its many forms.

Club members, led by Karen Ann Kurlander, also  created 121 "Prevent Child Abuse" lapel pins.  These were distributed at the Open House at Deirdre's House on April 3.

During May and June, members will continue to purchase and deliver single serve snacks and drinks as well as craft supplies needed by Deirdre's House.  Over the summer, members will also purchase school supplies and backpacks needed by children for the opening of the school year.

The summer months will also see much activity at the Clubhouse as members prepare for the Rummage Sale on August 25, 26 and 27.  The Rummage Sale is a major fundraiser for the Club.  The proceeds help maintain the historic Dr. Lewis Condict House as well as support the Club's charitable works including Prevent Child Abuse--New Jersey and Deirdre's House.
